Celery is part of the Apiaceae family, which includes carrots, parsnips, parsley, and celeriac. celery mericarps dated to the seventh century BC were recovered in the Heraion of Samos.Ajwain originated in the Middle East, possibly in Egypt and the Indian Subcontinent, but also in Iran, Egypt and Afghanistan. In India, the major Ajwain producing states are Rajasthan and Gujarat, where Rajasthan produces about 90% of India's total production.

Active enzymes in ajwain improve the flow of stomach acids, which can help to relieve indigestion, bloating, and gas. Celery contains a plant compound called apigenin, which plays a role in traditional medicine as an anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant agent and stimulating neurogenesis. Celery contains luteolin which have anticancer properties, celery extract reduced levels of low-density lipoprotein.
